Highett Neighbourhood Community House is celebrating all things health and wellbeing during the last week of April – 27 April to 1 May 2015.
Over the past 2 months we have held a weekly ‘Blokes in the kitchen’ cooking program, teaching a group of men survival cooking skills. Six local men of all ages have come together to develop their confidence in the kitchen and build their knowledge and skills around healthy and affordable eating. The men have had a fun time organising menus, shopping, preparing and eating the food together. One local family love dad’s new specialty, apricot chicken. Others have commented on the fun, humour and camaraderie shared during their time together. This program was sponsored by Bayside City Council.
To conclude our successful ‘Blokes in the kitchen’ program we are holding a wellness workshop on Tuesday 28 April from 10:30am to 12:30pm. We will have speakers from the Stroke Foundation, Bentleigh Bayside Community Health as well as Tai Chi and Mindfullness demonstrations. There will be free hearing and blood pressure checks, a delicious morning tea and a show bag for everyone attending. Health Wellbeing workshop flier Health Wellbeing workshop flier page 2

We also have a variety of exercise classes for all ages and levels of fitness. Pilates, group personal training, boxing, Metafit and the gentle Movement to Music are some of the classes that are free to try during this week.

We had a very successful Christmas in July Community Lunch on Friday 11 July. 32 people enjoyed a lovely 2 course Christmas dinner cooked by Marlene and supported by our volunteers Silvia and Cheryl. The entertainment was supplied by the Russian Seniors Choir who practise here every Wednesday morning. The raffle was also a big success raising over $110. Congratulations to one of our lucky Bridge Club members for winning first prize, the beautiful Christmas cake made and decorated by Marlene. The money raised is used to support the programs provided by HNCH.
Don’t forget we run our Community Lunch every Friday at 11:30 am, for only $5 you receive a light 2 course lunch. RSVP is required.
